304 food-grade stainless steel is the same grade used in commercial kitchen equipment, surgical food instruments, and food processing facilities worldwide. It is certified food-safe, non-porous, and non-reactive — it does not leach metals into water under normal use. The difference between 304 and 316 is corrosion resistance in saltwater environments. For a cat fountain used indoors with fresh water, 304 is the correct material. Your cat's food bowl is almost certainly 304.
